Mineral Specimen #6318    Quartz, Unidentified Zeolite (possibly Laumontite)

Isle Royale Mines, Houghton, Houghton Co., Michigan

8.8 x 7.6 x 5.5 cm

Sold

Ex. George Balogh, Ex. Robert Rann, likely from University of Michigan Natural History Museum

A curious specimen with small, needle like, double terminated, secondary growth Quartz crystals scattered over slightly larger, Quartz crystals. There are also crudely formed pink/orange colored zeolite crystals which are likely Laumontite. The matrix is basalt which in one part of the specimen is a dark gray color and in another area a reddish brown color. Where the Isle Royale mines were located is now a shopping area southwest of downtown Houghton which includes a WalMart, with very little of the dumps remaining. The cataog number appears to indicate the specimen was formerly in the Universrity of Michigan Natural History Museum collection. Note: I purchased quite a number of specimens from the collection 25 years ago from Dave Crawford when the collection was by Dave and Dan Weinrich. All the specimens had the same black on white painted ascension numbers, all with a capital M followed by digits and with the same style of writting. The specimen has been in the collection of two major collectors of Michigan minerals as well as Tamarack Minerals.

Condition: Good

Flaws: Nothing Appreciable
