Mineral Specimen #6228    Amethyst Crystals on Gemmy Sphalerite with Chalcopyrite

P-Vein 2 South, 5 Level, Commodore Mine, Creede, Mineral Co., Colorado

5.1 x 3 x 1.9 cm

Sold

Small, lavender Amethyst crystals partially cover large Sphalerite crystals. The Sphalerite is dichroic showing orange brown coloration with a green tint in places. The Sphalerite has a high, greasy luster and is quite gemmy in places. There are also a few Chalcopyrite crystals present which have a iridescent tarnish on the bottom, broken surfaces. This is classic material from a silver mining district which had a huge boom in the late 1800s. The town of Creede was wild and mostly lawless at the time noted for its saloons, gambling halls and brothels. This specimen was collected approximatley 10 years ago when the mine was reworked for specimens.

Condition: Good

Flaws: There is some minor internal cleaving of the Sphalerite crystals just below the surface which creates a lighter color.
