Ex. Robert Gannon, 1960s

Compared to similar specimens from this location, this specimen is uncommon in the following ways. It Is very large in size. It is still connected to the limestone matrix. Areas of the Calcite do not contain Celestine but do have casts after Celestine which gives the specimen a contrasting color in that area. There is also a possibility the orange/brown colored material is Jarosite which was found at the location with that coloration. Furthermore, I had also heard the vast majority of specimens from the location had been acid etched to better reveal the Celestine. The resulting structure of the Calcite was then referred to as Popcorn Calcite. There were reports that a few specimens were found naturally with this habit. This appears to be the case with this specimen as the limestone matrix and thin tabular Calcite crystals on the bottom of the specimen show no sign of exposure to acid. Under SW UV, the specimen fluoresces a brilliant green (as seen in the last photo). Under LW, the green is much less vivid, there are areas of light blue and the area with the casts exhibits a pale pink tint (not pictured).

Condition: Good

Flaws: There are a couple of small, bruised areas.
