Mineral Specimen #5363    Brown Fluorite with Purple and Brown Zoning

Blackdene Mine, Ireshopeburn, Weardale, North Pennines, Co. Durham, England

This Fluorite specimen is an overall light brown color which is a bit unusual for Fluorite from Durham. There are thin zoned layers of both darker brown and purple just below the surfaces. The interior is fairly transparent with some veils. The surfaces have a high, glossy luster. Under LW UV, the specimen vividly fluoresces violet blue. The Blackdene mine was first opened in the early 1800s and worked sporadially until 1987 after which it flooded and is now inaccessible.

Condition: Good

Flaws: There are a few, small chips on the edges.
