Mineral Specimen #5102    Dravite Tourmaline (2 pieces), minor Quartz and

Guadalupana Mine, Sierra del Chivato, Santa Cruz, Mun. de Santa Cruz, Sonora, Mexico

Ex. Steve Pullman, 1976 or earlier (wrapped in Tucson Daily Citizen newspapers - May 1, 1976)

Two Tourmaline crystals from the same mine which exhibit the range in habit found at the mine. Both specimens have surfaces which have a fibrous, silky appearance which is sometimes described as velvet like. One crystal is composed of a number of sub crystals, most of which have a parallel orientation with several crystals running at a diagonal. Most of the diagonal crystals are not well terminated - it is hard to determine if they end in contact points or breaks - likely a mix of both. This crystal stands nicely without the help of a prop or stand as depicted in the photos. The surfaces are lightly covered with a light colored, unidentified material which dulls the luster and lightens its overall appearance. The other crystal has a termination composed of three, flat, triangular surfaces, one of which is missing. These surfaces are very smooth with a high glossy luster. The sides of the crystal also have the same fibrous, silky texture as the other specimen. But unlike the other crystal, there is none of the powdering coating and the sides have a high luster. A note regarding the Tourmaline species from this location. For many years, the Tourmalines from the Santa Cruz area were called Schorl, but mindat lists Dravite with Schorl crossed out for this specific mine but lists Dravite, Schorl, Dravite-Schorl series and Uvite for the general area around Santa Cruz. There are a number of locations around the town other than the Guadalupana mine where Tourmaline specimens have been found. These specimens are from a mine run flat which is labeled as being from Guadalupana.

Condition: Good

Flaws: Only two faces are intact on the crystal with the flat surfaces on the termination. This crystal Is not complete on the back. The other crystal is without significant flaws.

7.8 x 2.8 x 2.8 and 5.6 x4.7 x 3.3 cm
