Mineral Specimen #499 Calcite
Stank Mine, Barrow, South Western Region (Furness), Cumbria, England
Ex. Eugene Sensel, Ex. Vassar College
The Calcite on this specimen is extremely lustrous and clear for which this mine is noted. This is definitely classic material. The mine was active from 1871 until 1901. The specimen is in very good to excellent condition. The reference to Poughkeepsie is a reference to the geology museum at Vassar college. An interesting fact from Vassar college's website is the following: 'Matthew Vassar had a "cabinet" of mineral and rock specimens installed in 1862, the first sale by the leading supply house in the United States for educational scientific equipment, Ward's Natural Science Establishment in Rochester, New York'. It is unclear what the year of 1939 on the label is refers to. The specimen is in very good condition.
