Mineral Specimen #4994    Calcite with Unidentified Pink Alteration, Chalcopyrite

Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend Dist., Reynolds Co., Missouri

On this hexagonal Calcite specimen, the Calcite has altered to an unidentified pink colored material just above the boundary of the Chalcopyrite. This may not actually be an alteration but a case where the Calcite is colored with an impurity. In either case, I have never seen a similar specimen from the location. However, there have been similar hexagonal Calcite crystals with a layer of green material at the base which is usually attributed to being Malachite. The rest of the Calcite specimen is translucent and has a good glossy luster.

Condition: Very Good

Flaws: There are a few very small chips on the edges of the termination.

4.2 x 1.9 x 1.5 cm
