Mineral Specimen #4912    Kyanite, Quartz, Muscovite

Sao Jose da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Rich blue colored blades of Kyanite in a matrix of massive white colored Quartz with minor Muscovite. The Kyanite has a high glossy luster and for the most part is translucent with a few very small transparent crystals. The color is varied with darker areas running the length of the crystals. The location was named by early settlers who thought the Kyanite was Sapphire.

Condition: Good

Flaws: None of the Kyanite crystals are terminated (which is usually the case for the species). Also, the specimen was recently mined in Brazil and some of the Quartz matrix is fractured and small crumbs can fall from the specimen.

18.7 x 6.2 x 5.8 cm
