Mineral Specimen #486 Green Octahedral Flourite with Quartz
Riemvasmaak, Siyanda, North Cape Province, South Africa
The octahedral Fluorite of this specimen has a surface which is extremely rough. It is hard to say if the crystals grew this way or were subject to some sort of dissolution. What is quite unusual for this location is that the green octahedral Fluorite is an overgrowth over cubic Fluorite which is zoned purple and blue. A photo of the bottom is provided to show this. The Fluorite glows a bright blue under longwave UV. The main crystal measures between 3 and 4 cm on its edges. The specimen is in excellent condition with no appreciable damage. The only aesthetic distraction is the presence of what appears to be a cast in one of the sides of the main crystal. This has a small ridge of Quartz within which is slightly iron stained.
