Mineral Specimen #482 Calcite covered with Bitumen with Fluorite
Cave-In-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois
The Calcite crystals of this specimen have a lighter colored, secondary overlayer of Strontian bearing Calcite. In places, there is a layer of Bitumen covering the Calcite. The unusual thing about this specimen, is the small Fluorite crystals which grew on top of the Calcite in the reserve order from what is usually seen. The specimen could be rated as very good to excellent condition except one large crystal appears to have snapped off at the base. Since this is a clear break flush with the matrix, it is not very noticable. The Strontian bearing layer fluoresces cream colored moderately well under LW and less so under SW where is has a bit of bluish cast.
