Mineral Specimen #4769    Watermelon Tourmaline

Pederneira claim, Sao Jose da Safira, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil

A very gemmy Watermelon Tourmaline with vibrant colors (note: the red/pink interior is a little better color in person than in the photos). The red/pink interior runs the length of the crystal with the exception of approximately 5 mm below the termination. The termination is very smooth and flat with a glassy luster. I originally purchased this specimen from Hawthorneden circa 2000 at the Springfield show and soon thereafter sold it to a local collector from whom it was just repurchased. Because of the acrylic base, the specimen cannot be accurately weighed and it is preferable not to remove it from the base Frank Melanson mounted it upon.

Condition: Good

Flaws: There is some minor chipping along edge of the termination. Also, there are internal cleaves perpendicular to the C axis which are common in Tourmaline crystals and visble in the photos.

3.7 x 1.8 x 0.9 cm
The cross section of the main crystals measures 10 x 9 mm
