Mineral Specimen #4734    Metacinnabar

Mount Diablo Mine, Mount Diablo, Clayton, Diablo Range, Contra Costa Co., California


A specimen of mostly massive, dark metallic gray Metacinnabar. There is one area, near one of the corners of the specimen, where there are some well formed crystals of Metacinnabar. There are a number of other unidentified species on this specimen including a pale yellow material. There are micro, red colored, micro crystals on the surface which are likely Cinnabar. The specimen was collected by Leo Rosenhahn, a noted amateur mineralogist for which the mineral, Rosenhahnite was named.
