Mineral Specimen #464 Pyrite, Goethite and Calcite
Approximately 2400 foot level, Algoma Ore Property, Division of Algoma, Steel Corporation, Wawa, Algoma District, Ontario, Canada
The white Calcite on this specimen is quite lustrous and contrasts nicely with the darker Goethite. The Pyrite crystals are quite small. In the area between the two Calcite crystals and the single crystal, there are small Dolomite crystals under the Pyrite. The Goethite is for the most part dark gray to black with a reddish brown velvety overcoat in places. Specimens from this location are seldom seen for sale. The miners were forbidden from retrieving specimens. The location information comes from the back of a business card from Young's Gift & Bait Shop. A number of different services are listed on the card (including Fina gas whichno longer exists). Listed on the card is 'Featuring the Rock Corner' which is apparently where the specimen from. Most likely, this was purchased on location; the area around Wawa is incredibly beautiful. Written on the card is 'Calcite Fl. Pink'. It does glow pink, but rather faintly. The specimen is in good condition. The Calcite is unbruised, although the single crystal ends in a small cleavage break. A photocopy of the business card will be sent.
