Mineral Specimen #462    Amethyst and Calcite

Guanajuato, Mun. de Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico

The Calcite of this specimen has an unusual habit sitting on a bed of Amethyst crystals. From the Calcite's habit and the banded aspect of the Amethyst it seems likely the specimen came from the De Cata mine. Guanajuato is an old silver mining district which was started soon after the Conquistadors came to Mexico. Along with other minerals, it is noted for its Calcite crystals of unusual habit and its Amethyst. The specimen is in good condition with a minimum of bruising to the Calcite.
