Mineral Specimen #456 Sphalerite and Quartz
Lechang Mine, Lechang Co., Shaoguan Prefecture, Guangdong Province, China
On one side of this specimen are large Sphalerite crystals and on the other small, lustrous Quartz crystals. The Sphalerite crystals on this specimen have a very high luster. The color varies from black to a reddish color. Clarity of the Sphalerite varies from opaque to translucent to almost transparent. The better clarity yields the better color. This color is more apparent on some of the crystals when backlit. Some of the crystals show good color to a depth of one or two mm. The largest crystals are over 3 cm across. On the Quartz, there are some small Sphalerite crystals with very nice color. Included in the Quartz crystals are more of the small colorful Sphalerite crystals. This gives the Quartz an overall reddish brown tint. A few of the Sphalerite crystals have a sparse coating of micro crystals of Chalcopyrite. There are also three Galena crystals which are each better than 1 cm across. There is some bruising of the Sphalerite but relatively sparse given the size of the specimen (this is also why the specimen is not priced considerably more).
