Mineral Specimen #4515    Two Generations of Fluorite

Hardin Co., Illinois

Ex. A. Neely, 1960s

There are two distinct generations of Fluorite on this specimen. Partially overlaying yellow Fluorite is a layer of Fluorite which ranges in color from clear to light blue with light purple edging in places. The yellow Fluorite has curved surfaces which are likely casts after Barite. The surfaces of the yellow fluorite are without luster. In contrast, the overlaying blue/purple colored Fluorite has a glassy luster. This outer layer has unusual surface patterns which may either be casts or caused by etching. In places, the light colored Fluorite has formed small cubic crystals.

Condition: Good

Flaws: There is one small place where the blue/purple Fluorite has a slight cleave.
