Mineral Specimen #4423    Pipestone (Catlinite - a mix of Pyrophyllite and Muscovite)

Barron County Pipestone Quarry near Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin

A piece of pipestone which is used for carving peace pipes by Native Americans. The quarry from which the specimen was mined is considered sacred by the Ojibwa (Chippewa) and was added to the US National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This particular specimen exhibits a nice banding of colors.

Condition: Composed of massive material.

Flaws: Some bruising.
