Mineral Specimen #4230    Calcite on Hematite Included Quartz

Old Bal lode, Levant Mine, Pendeen, St Just, St Just District, Cornwall, England

Ex. H. R. McBroom, from trade with Sam Weller, 1983

A cluster of fairly large Quartz crystals which are colored a reddish brown by micro inclusions of Hematite. On the underside of the specimen, it can be seen on the largest crystal, the Hematite inclusions are in banded layers. The Quartz crystals are essentially all terminated faces with no distinguishable sides. These faces are composed of many parallel, terminated sub crystals. On one side of the Quartz crystals, covering 2 to 3 of the faces, there is a coating of druze Calcite crystals. The Calcite crystals are also colored reddish brown with Hematite which are a lighter, contrasting color from the Quartz. The Calcite crystals have a good sparkle contrasting with the low glossy luster of the Quartz. Interestingly, the faces of the Quartz coated with the Calcite have recessed, hopper growth surfaces; whereas the other surfaces of the Quartz have a slight curved habit. Regarding the location, there is no Old Bal Mine per se; however, the Old Bal Lode was mined in the Levant mines near Pendeen (ref: The Geology of the Land's End District' published in 1907). The specimen is in good condition
