Mineral Specimen #404 Spessartine Garnet on Smoky Quartz
Tongbei, Yunxiao County, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China
This is a large Smoky Quartz crystal covered on two sides with bright orange, gemmy, Spessartine Garnet crystals. This is one of the largest single crystals I have seen from this location. This location has been closed to collecting by the Chinese government for the past few years. The Spessartine crystals have a very high luster. The Quartz is a pale gray color and fairly transparent at the terminated end. There are a couple of chips on the edges of the termination and a little crust of white material on parts of the Quartz at the other end (there was quite a bit more but I removed most of it with a dental pick).
