Mineral Specimen #386 Sulfur and strontian-Calcite on Celestine
Stoneco Quarry, Maybee, Monroe County, Michigan
This is a nice combination specimen with all three of the predominate species of minerals found at this quarry. This came from an old collection I bought this fall. There were quite a number of specimens from this quarry wrapped in newspapers which were disintergrating and were probably self-collected by the former now deceased owners. At the time these specimens were collected, the quarry was probably called the Woolworth quarry. The Sulfur crystals range in color from lemon yellow to a darker yellow. The darker yellow is due to the inclusion of hydrocarbons. The Celestine is a very pale blue gray. It appears there is some Sulfur even included in the Celestine. The specimen is in decent condition with some damage to the darker Sulfur. There is also still dirt in some of the recessed areas. The specimen was originally very dirty; but one must be careful when cleaning because the Sulfur is a bit delicate and does not tolerate hot water. The Calcite on the specimen is very fluorescent due the presence of Strontium. Under LW, the color is a bright white with a hint of blue and under SW, the color is white with a hint of pink and has good phosphorescence. Sorry I didin't have time to do any UV photos.
