Mineral Specimen #3503    Hematite variety: Kidney Ore

New Parkside Mine, Frizington, Cumbria, England

A classic kidney ore specimen from one of the long closed northern England iron mines active during the Industrial Revolution. The name kidney ore refers to the resemblance of the botryoidal surface to that of a kidney. The surface has a high luster, is chocolate brown in color with a few areas having a bright red overlayer. The specimen is in fairly good condition with the exception of three chipped areas, visable in the photos.
