Mineral Specimen #343 Schorl Tourmaline, Almandine Garnet, Apatite
Morgan Pit, Greenwood, Oxford County, Maine, USA
The Morgan Pit (or Quarry) is just above the famous Harvard Quarry. This is a specimen I collected myself, on Aug. 5, 2000, which was on my birthday. It was a rather steep climb up and the weather was very hot and humid (it had actually rained that morning). On the way up, I heard a lot of noise from heavy equipment and debris being pushed over the mountainside (on the other side, thankfully). When I got to the top, who should I met, but the owner of the property, Frank Perham (as in Perhamite). I managed to get about a hundred specimens, but it was not until this fall that I got the iron stains cleaned off of them. An attempt will be made to post more of them later. All of the specimens had a bit of fracture damage, as this one does. There is also some minor Muscovite. The Apatite is listed as Fluorapatite on mindat.
