Mineral Specimen #3393    Columbite-Tantalite Series

Itinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil

A black metallic, flat, cubic crystal in the Columbite-Tantalite Series. This is a generic term for minerals in the Columbite/Tantalite families of minerals which are hard to distinguish without sophisticated testing and indeed more than one mineral can be found in different zones of the same crystal. This is a relatively large specimen of this material. One of the large flat sides have interesting curved growth patterns. The surface of the other side has a pitted texture with minor attached Muscovite and feldspar. The specimen is in fairly good condition with the exception of damage to one edge and some chipping to one surface.
