Mineral Specimen #268 Chrome Grossular Garnet on Diopside
Orford Nickel mine, St-Denis-de-Brompton, Sherbrooke County, Quebec, Canada
This is an old Canadian classic. This is as green as garnets get, especially for Grossular. In old collections, it is common to see this material mislabeled as Uvarovite. The Diopside was often called "Jack Straw" because of it's resemblance in color and form to straw. Occasionally, as in this specimen, the Diopside would also be colored bright green by the chrome. Apparently, the garnet were almost always quite small. The largest crysals on this specimen are about 1 mm. Please note: I have used the location name in use at the time when the specimen would have been collected and what is seen on most labels; since then, the names of the counties have been changed in Quebec.
