Mineral Specimen #254    Bicolor Tourmaline (Elbaite)

Himalaya Mine, San Diego County, California, USA

This is an attractive bicolor California Tourmaline. The specimen is fairly gemmy, especially the green cap. The pink is a nice rose color. When looking down the C axis, the color is an odd olive with peach overtones. This is due to the green being so clear, the pink shows through. There are small chips in two of the three corners of the termination (best seen in the first photo). The dark hook shape on the termination in the first photo is a growth line. It is an edge of a small area which is depressed compared to the rest of the termination. The rest of the termination is composed of many flattened, smaller, trangular terminations.
