Mineral Specimen #1292 Calcite psuedomorph after Barite, Chalcopyrite
Zacatecas, Mexico
A large bladed Barite crystal has been coated with small, white dogtooth crystals of Calcite. This specimen was labeled as a pseudomorph, but is likely a epimorph or paramorph where most, if not all, of the Barite still exists inside the Calcite. There is no good way to tell without breaking the crystal open. On one side of the pseudomorph, the Calcite is coated with micro crystals of some unidentified metallic gray Sulfide. The matrix is composed of Chalcopyrite crystals some of which many show very sharp, triangular faces. The specimen is in good condition. The pseudomorph is in very good condition with no appreciable damage. There is some minor wear and chipping on a few of the edges of Chalcopyrite, not really enough to distract from the appearance of the specimen.
