Mineral Specimen #1272    Baculites

Pierre Shale, South Dakota, USA

Cretaceous Period

Bacculites was a Cephlapod, a creature with a long shell and tentacles. The iridescent color is evenly dispersed on two sides and one edge of the specimen. The edge is lacking in nacre. The color changes as the specimen is turned in the light from a lime green to a lavender. Interspersed with the green sections are lines of red. Where the lavender is seen, there are flashes of blue. The colors are more vivid in person with exception of the blue which is less pronounced.
