Mineral Specimen #1265    Dioptase on Calcite

Tsumeb, Namibia

Very attractive Dioptase crystals scattered across white, druze Calcite. The Dioptase crystals are up to 2mm long and are gemmy and with good luster. Most are double terminated. The color is a beautiful emerald green, not as dark as most Dioptase which is likely due to the thinness of the crystals and their isolation (the color is better in person - Dioptase is most difficult to replicate with digital cameras). The top layer of Calcite has a slight tint of green, presumably due to micro inclusions of Dioptase. On the bottom of the specimen, there is a powder blue material which is likely Plancheite. The specimen is in excellent condition with no damage to the Dioptase crystals. The only flaw is a bit of fibrous material stuck with glue to the bottom, apparently due to some previous type of mounting.

6.6 x 3.4 x 4.8 cm
