Mineral Specimen #1227    Myrickite: Cinnabar in Common Opal

Winnemucca District, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA

Brilliant red Cinnabar which contrasts nicely with enclosing white opaque Common Opal. Myrickite is an old name used by lapidarists for this material. It does take a high polish and makes quite nice cabs. There are a few small, scattered, isolated dark included spots which may possibly be Metacinnabar.

7.2 x 6.4 x 2.2 cm
