Mineral Specimen #1208    Emerald in Biotite Schist

Minas Gerais, Brazil

The Emerald in this specimen has good green color but is not gemmy. There is an unidentified pink material in the matrix. I was immeadiately reminded of some Montmorillonite I collected at the Tamminen quarry in Maine about 15 years ago. Indeed, the material (most of which is white) does feel a bit powdery and does seem like a clay mineral. The pink does contrast nicely with the green. There is also some unidentified yellowish colored material. None of the Emerald crystals are terminated and most have fractures perpendicular to the C axis.

8.3 x 5.9 x 4.2 cm
