Mineral Specimen #1200 Fluorapatite, Quartz and Mica Group
Panasqueira Mines, Panasqueira, Covilha, Castelo Branco District, Portugal
he Apatite crystals on this specimen are transparent with a glassy luster. The Apatite is actually colorless, but there are inclusions of an unidentified mineral which imparts are overall dark green color. Within most of the crystals, there are dark, sharp, hexagonal phantoms. The largest Apatite crystals is 1.5 x .8 cm. There are two very small (appx. 1 mm) micro crystals of purple Apatite crystals on one side of the specimen (see last two pictures). These are not noticeable unless one looks for them (I found them while examining the specimen with a 10x loupe). The Apatite crystals are in very good condition especially the assemblage of larger crystals at one end of the specimen. One of the crystals in this grouping has internal fractures. There is one crystal near the middle of the specimen which has a section missing near the base. Some of the Quartz crystals have snapped off.
