Mineral Specimen #1195 Rhodolite Garnet Crystals in Biotite Schist
Masons Branch, Macon County, North Carolina, USA
Type Location
No longer a valid species - this was considered the type location.
Large crystals of Rhodolite Garnet. Rhodolite is a pink variety of Pyrope which was at one time considered a distinct species with this location being the type location. The Garnet contrasts nicely with the black Biotite schist. The largest crystal is on average 1.8 cm in diameter. This crystal is complete but has some internal factures. Some of the crystals are broken. The specimen does feel as if it has been oiled. There are Garnet crystals throughout the matrix with more visible on the bottom of the specimen. The specimen is very attractive.
