Mineral Specimen #1185    Tapiolite-Fe (Ferrotapiolite)

Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil

(Fe,Mn)(Ta,Nb)2O6

This specimen is extremely large for this rare species; definetly the largest I have ever seen. The main crystal measures 3.8 x 3.0 x 2.1 cm. The Tapiolite is black with a metallic luster. The crystal faces are well defined with beveled faces. No one I have shown this specimen to has had a clue as to the species, most think it is Hematite. The specimen is in very good condition with just a few minor chips on the edges. The back of the specimen is not complete and shows uneven fracture.

5.2 x 3.9 x 2.4 cm
