Mineral Specimen #1179 Herkimer Diamonds on Black Druze
Ace of Diamonds Mine, Middleville, Town of Newport, Herkimer Co., New York, USA
The first thing one notices about this specimen is it is very sparkly due to its high luster and multitude of surfaces. The largest crystals are clear at the ends and take on the double terminated aspect of Herkimer diamonds. Further towards the interior, the color gets darker and darker. The color ranges from brown to a dark brown to almost black. It appears the crystals have grown on a knob which sticks up from the base. The specimen is in fairly good condtion, but there are a few places where crystals broke off and there are a couple of fractured crystals; although, if it was perfect, the specimen would have a considerable higher price. The specimen was collected in the mid 1960s. It was collected by a gentleman from Enfield, Connecticut who died in 1970. For years, he collected at Herkimer whenever he got a chance. I bought his entire collection a couple of years ago. This specimen was part of his display which he would exhibit and still retains one of his numbered labels on the bottom.
