Mineral Specimen #1158    Chondrodite and Blue Spinel in Marble

Ladjuar Medam, Sar-e Sang, Koksha Valley, Khash & Kuran Wa Munjan Districts, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

(Mg,Fe2+)5(SiO4)2(F,OH)2

The colors on this specimen nicely contrast each other. The Chondrodite is a bright orange and the Spinel is a blue with a hint of purple, both on a bed of snow white marble. The Chondrodite crystal is 5 mm in length. The Spinel crystals have a number of internal fractures and some are damaged (most notably, the large crystal next to the Chondrodite). The sides and bottom have been sawed.
