Mineral Specimen #1146 Galena, Cerussite, Pyromorphite and Quartz
Wheatley Mines, Phoenixville Mining District, Schuylkill Township, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, USA
Two large, much decomposed Galena crystals on a bed of Quartz crystals. The Galena has surfaces which are in places concave depressions and in other places flat cleavage planes. The original surface of the Galena was replaced with a layer of Cerussite and then covered with a layer of bright green Pyromorphite. Due to the decomposition, these layers are observable. In places on the Quartz, are some thin bladed crystals of an unidentified mineral. Covering much of the Quartz and these bladed crystals is a layer of micro Pyromorphite crystals. The Pyromorphite gets thickest and exhibits the best color in a girdle around the Galena crystals. There is also some nice, slightly largerr crystals on one of the sides of the specimens which suggests this was probably a fracture seam. The specimen is in good condition.
