Mineral Specimen #1133    Catseye Aquamarine

Minas Gerais, Brazil

This is a most unusual cabochon. There are parallel orientated crystals included in the Aquamarine. These crystals are possibly Rutile. Therse are quite coarse and widely spaced apart. Many do not extend all the way across the cab and in some cases appear to be missing, leaving a hollow tube. Amazingly, the catseye effect is quite pronounced when turned at certain angles (although difficult to photograph). The cab has a high polish and a high dome which is porbably necessary to produce the catseye effect. The curved surface does not extend all the way to the base; there is an area of unpolished stone around the sides.
